If you ask me whether to hold your Sikh wedding ceremony and reception on the same day or over two days, I lean towards two. Have the Anand Karaj on one day and the reception the following day. The biggest reason is simple: there is no rush to get from the ceremony to the reception.
That is my preference, rather than a rule for every wedding. For a UK Sikh or Punjabi couple weighing up the two options, though, it is worth considering before you commit to both bookings.
The afternoon is where the pressure builds
A same-day plan can look comfortable until you put everything into it: family photographs, time to eat, travelling between venues, checking in, changing outfits, hair and makeup, and getting ready for the reception entrance. Each part needs its own time.
Putting the reception on the following day takes that fixed arrival deadline out of the ceremony afternoon. You can spend time with your families without the reception schedule already pulling you somewhere else. There will still be timings to agree, especially with your Gurdwara and suppliers, but fewer things are competing for the same few hours.
What this changes for your photographs and film
From a photography and film point of view, I would rather we plan time properly than squeeze every photograph into the gap before your next entrance. Family groups need organising. Portraits need an agreed place and a realistic window. Neither should depend on everyone moving faster than expected.
Two days gives us more options. We can plan photographs in your ceremony outfits on day one, then a separate portrait session in your reception outfits on day two. Those sessions still need to fit the available light, weather and booked coverage. An extra day creates room in the plan; it does not replace planning.
How I would divide the two days
Start with your confirmed ceremony arrangements, then build around them. This is an outline to discuss with your families and suppliers, not a timetable every Sikh wedding should follow.
Day one: the ceremony and family time
Allow for preparations and travel, the Anand Karaj at the time agreed with your Gurdwara, langar and your family’s plans afterwards. Agree when and where family photographs and couple portraits can happen, and leave space for any departure customs you are including. Keep the evening manageable if you want to feel rested tomorrow.
Day two: getting ready for the reception
Give reception preparations their own start time. Plan portraits before guests arrive if that suits your venue and the light, then set the guest arrival, couple’s entrance, meal and speeches with the venue and entertainment team. Make the two dates and locations clear on invitations.
The extra day has a cost
Before booking, get quotes for both dates. Ask your photographer and filmmaker which hours, travel and deliverables are included. Check hair and makeup, transport and venue arrangements too. A package for one long day should not be assumed to cover two separate dates.
Think about guests travelling from elsewhere in the UK or abroad. A second date may mean another hotel night, more childcare or extra time off work. If you are considering a Saturday ceremony and Sunday reception, think about the Sunday finish and people’s Monday travel or work commitments.
Agree the shape of the weekend with the people whose attendance matters most before paying deposits. The calmer option for you needs to be workable for them as well.
If one day works better for you
A same-day ceremony and reception can still work. I would look carefully at the journey between venues, allow a proper changing window, and agree a realistic photograph list. Build in spare time rather than filling every minute. If the afternoon only works when nothing runs late, revisit it.
My preference remains the reception the next day, where the budget and family arrangements allow it. You get to enjoy the ceremony without spending the afternoon working backwards from a reception entrance time.
